What to leave

Leaving things behind is a tricky decision.  You don't want to leave too much, because purhasing replacements will be costly, but you also don't want to bring so much that you will not be able to use that you end up with piles of boxes holding unusable items.  The Navy will arrange for a storage packout.  They will pay for you to store the items you do not want to take to Italy with you.

Anything irreplaceable: Naples has a lot of crime, not to mention an overseas move is not easy on your stuff.  If you would be heartbroken if something got lost or stolen, leave it behind.  Family heirlooms, photos, pianos, etc.  If you really want an item in Naples, make a copy (if possible) and bring the copy.

Large appliances: washer/dryer/fridge/stove: they are heavy and won't work if you decide to live on the economy.  The Navy will issue you a rental washer and dryer when you move into your house.

Smaller appliances:  appliances that have timers or clocks will not work (because Naples runs on 220V not 110V like the US) in Italy so leave them behind.  If you are determined to live on base, the base is wired for both so you'll be fine using them.

Expensive Jewelry: Again, theft is common.  Just leave it.

Big cars: Leave your Dodge 2500 home...the roads are tiny.  Plus you'll use a TON of fuel and it is SUPER expensive here (appx $12/gal).  There are plenty of cars on the 'lemon lot'...sell the truck and use the $ to buy a vehicle when you arrive.

  1. Hello, thank you for the great information. We just spent 6 years in Okinawa, where the dings on the cars are constant and I would never recommend anyone bringing an American car there either. But we plan to do a lot of long road trips while we are there. Is it feasible to have one American car that you keep on base and two local cars for every day use? Thank you.

    1. Randy and Ken - you can only have two cars licensed to you at a time. So you could have one American car and one local car.

  3. Hi we are moving to Napoli soon- Fall 2015. We are a larger family (4 kids) and want to have a car that will fit the whole family. We don't care about the dings, but would a Town and Country Minivan be too big to bring? Would we be targeted? Are there family cars like minivans on the lemon lot you mentioned? Thanks in advance! We'll likely be on the economy, my husband is civilian movin over with DoD.

    1. Marghee, we bought a used Honda Odyssey on the lemon lot here after our second child was born. We drive it all over. It does make you a target since it's obviously an american car, but we are just careful to leave NOTHING in it, and if we know we are going to a riskier area we cram into our smaller Naples beater for that trip. You can find larger things like Fiat Multiplas...but not often. And almost all cars on the lemon lot are manuals.
We have been turned away from a couple parking garages because the van is too big...so we just had to look for another. Or, we plan ahead and take the other car for the night.

  4. We are preparing for our move to Naples! Woohoo!! Is it stupid to bring leather living room furniture? I have no problem getting something else if leather wouldn't be advised due to hot weather/poor air conditioning, etc. Thanks for any advice!!
